Montenegro to sign NATO accession agreement
Today, NATO and Montenegro will sign an accession agreement, which can make Montenegro NATO’s 29th Member State. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called it “a clear sign that NATO countries continue to build stability and security in the Western Balkans.» It might take the other 28 Member States 18 months to ratify the accession agreement. Montenegro was invited to become a NATO member last December, under warnings from Russia that it would have to respond to protect its ‘security interests’ in the Balkans.
