Cooperation on irregular migration

At the Justice and Home Affairs Council taking place Friday 5 December, ministers discussed amongst other issues migration and foreign fighters.

Commissioner for Migration Dimitri Avramopoulos told the press that the Council decided to expand cooperation with countries outside the EU that are either countries of origin or transit countries. The countries they want to cooperate with include Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan, some barely functioning and/or undemocratically ruled states as EUobserver writes.

Already at 28 November ministers of these countries and EU ministers travelled to Rome to sign the Karthoum declaration, in which they agree on cooperation in key areas including stepping up irregular migration prevention measures, establish national strategies and develop a regional framework for return.
