Referenda in the UK, Denmark … and the Netherlands

Whereas voters in the UK will have a referendum at the end of 2017 on EU membership, and Danish voters will have a referendum on whether to change their ‘opt-out’ on EU justice and home affairs to an ‘opt-in’ on 3 December 2015, the Netherlands will now join the list with a referendum on the Association Agreement with Ukraine, probably early 2016.

An initiative of the website GeenStijl and two citizens organisations has, according to them, gathered enough signatures to trigger a non-binding referendum under a new referendum law, which allows citizens to hold referenda on already adopted, but not yet implemented laws – such as the Association Agreement with Ukraine, which the organisers oppose.
