Pro-independence parties win in Catalonia

CataloniaPro-independence parties have won 72 out of 135 seats in Catalonia’s parliament after a regional vote which turned into a vote on Catalonia’s independence. The Spanish government opposed a vote on independence, and its constitution does not allow for regions to break away. It will continue to oppose any movements in the direction of independence. However, acting regional government head Artur Mas stated that this vote had given them a ‘democratic mandate’ to move forward with independence.
