Ombudsman proposes more transparent expert groups

EU Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly has made proposals to the European Commission to make expert groups more transparent. She stated that the Commission is not doing enough to open up expert groups for public scrutiny, and proposes a legally binding framework for the groups, including measures for more balanced representation and to reduce conflicts of interest.

Expert groups give advice to the Commission on particular policy areas. Critics say the groups are too often composed of corporate lobbyists and civil society is underrepresented.
