No agreement at Council on Migration
- Ministers gathered for an extraordinary Council on Migration failed to agree on Juncker’s second relocation proposal of 120.000 refugees. Instead of unanimous agreement on binding quota’s, ministers “agreed in principle to relocate an additional 120,000 persons” confirming only “their willingness to participate” in the relocation scheme.
- Ministers did agree to set up special reception centres in Greece; increase border protection at external frontiers; aid for UNCHR refugee camps; and to soon finalise a ‘safe countries of origin’ list, which will not include Turkey.
- In response to the Council results, the European Commission stated that «We need to come to a more fundamental change of the current system».
